Ceramic materials

Ceramic masonry materials are, obviously, all materials that have been made from clay and are used for bricklaying. The best known example are of course bricks, but also baked paving stones, ceramic floor and wall tiles and clay roof tiles are frequently used.

“Geo Measuring & Analysis nv was the first independent laboratory that invested in high-tech equipment for performing all kinds of tests to determine the resistance to frost and thaw, ranging from sandbox testing on individual products to the European test on a wall built in the laboratory."

A list of the tests that are performed at Geo Measuring & Analysis nv on ceramic materials:

Bricks

  • Dimensions
  • Water absorption through capillary action
  • Water absorption upon immersion
  • Initial water absorption
  • Compressive strength
  • Efflorescence
  • Frost resistance according to Belgian and European standard
  • Density
  • Actively soluble salts

Baked paving stones

  • Dimensions
  • Flexural strength (transverse breaking load and estimated tensile strength)
  • Water absorption upon immersion
  • Frost resistance
  • Sliding resistance
  • Wear resistance
  • Acid resistance

Tests to establish the frost/thaw resistance are also performed on ceramic wall and floor tiles and on roof tiles.
