Concrete and natural stone

Concrete

Concrete is a construction material that is expertly composed of the correct ratio of additives (natural or rubble granulates – depending on whether rich or lean mixed concrete is being made – and sand) and cement, which has as characteristic feature that it hardens when adding water, thus matching the hardness of natural stone.   To check the features of the concrete, tests are being performed on several test pieces. In a concrete mixing plant, for instance, concrete cubes are made at regular intervals, which are then subjected to compression tests. Before installing a concrete floor or within the scope of road construction works, cores are drilled from the installed paving. On the other hand, tests are also being performed on the prefabricated concrete products themselves.  At Geo Measuring & Analysis nv, we can examine the constituents of concrete (additives and cement) as well as the mixing water. We can also perform a wide array of tests on finished products or installed concrete paving. This way, you can be sure of the quality of your product from fabrication to realisation and your products are protected against early wear, corrosion and expensive repair works.

Natural stone

The term natural stone covers quite a lot of natural products. Distinction is made on the basis of appearance or mineralogy. We can, for instance, distinguish between granite, bluestone, marble, etc., which are frequently used for construction works (both indoor and outdoor) or for street furniture. It is a stone that is exploited from nature through mining. Most sorts are characterised by a high compressive strength and low water absorption.

Often, a particular product is chosen on the basis of its physical or chemical features. GEO Measuring & Analysis nv supports you throughout the entire process with the quality management of a product so that you have the best possible knowledge.  A list of the tests that are performed at Geo Measuring & Analysis nv:

Concrete:

  • Drilling of cores
  • Thickness and nature of granulates on concrete cores
  • Compressive strength (including density) of concrete cores and cubes
  • Water absorption
  • Analysis of the mixing water used
  • Compression test and hydration heat test on cement

Concrete products:

  • Splitting test to establish the tensile strength
  • Water absorption
  • Wear resistance
  • Sliding resistance
  • Hygrometric contraction and swelling
  • Frost resistance

Natural stone:

  • Compressive strength
  • Flexural strength
  • Sliding resistance
  • Wear resistance
  • Frost resistance
  • Density and porosity
  • Water absorption upon immersion
